When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame revealed its 2026 nominee list on February 25, Iron Maiden's name was finally on it — for the third time. What should have been a clean, overdue moment of recognition immediately turned into a controversy: Blaze Bayley, the man who fronted Iron Maiden for five years and recorded two studio albums with the band, was not included in the list of nominated members.
Bayley's name has since been added. Quietly, without fanfare, the Hall of Fame updated the official nomination page — and the man who sang on The X Factor and Virtual XI is now included in what would be a historic induction if Iron Maiden's time finally comes in 2026.
Who Was on the List — and Who Was Missing
The original nomination listed the band's current lineup — Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Nicko McBrain, Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, and Janick Gers — along with former guitarist Dennis Stratton, former vocalist Paul Di'Anno, and former drummer Clive Burr, who passed away in 2013.
Bayley's absence was glaring from the jump. He joined Iron Maiden in 1994 following Bruce Dickinson's first departure and recorded two full studio albums during his tenure: The X Factor (1995) and Virtual XI (1998). That's five years of contribution to one of heavy metal's most storied catalogs, and the Hall initially had him down as a non-entity.
For context: Clive Burr, who drummed on only three studio albums before health issues forced his retirement, was included from day one. Paul Di'Anno, who fronted the band on their first two records, was also there. Bayley, who logged 54 months and two LPs with the group, wasn't — at least not initially.
Fans Caught It Immediately
The oversight didn't last long unnoticed. Maiden fans flagged the omission almost immediately after the announcement, and it spread quickly across forums and social media. The Rock Hall, to their credit or embarrassment depending on your read, updated the nomination to include Bayley's name within weeks.
This isn't the first time Bayley's connection to the nomination has come up. When Maiden was first nominated in 2021, Bayley addressed it directly, saying he didn't hold it against the band — that the decision belonged to the institution, not to Steve Harris or the Maiden camp. "The most important thing to me is my friendship with the guys in Iron Maiden," he said at the time. "I don't really care if I'm in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame or I'm not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame."
That attitude has been consistent from him across multiple rounds of nominations. Whether or not he's personally invested in the recognition, the correction still matters as a matter of institutional record-keeping.
What Happens Next
The 2026 Rock Hall inductees are expected to be announced in April. Iron Maiden is on their third nomination after failing to get in during the 2021 and 2023 cycles — and the timing has arguably never been more favorable. Their 50th anniversary tour is still rolling. The Run For Your Lives world tour has been a commercial force. A documentary is in the pipeline. By any metric, this is Maiden's moment.
If they get in — and the smart money says this is finally the year — the full recognized member list now includes Bayley alongside the current lineup and the other former members. That's the version of history that gets preserved. The Rock Hall nearly fumbled it.
The class of 2026 inductees will be formally announced in April, with the ceremony expected later in the fall.
It's also worth noting that Bayley has remained active and relevant well beyond his Maiden years. His solo catalog — including Silicon Messiah, The Man Who Would Not Die, and the more recent Circle of Stone (2024) — has earned him a dedicated fanbase that follows his career on its own terms. His inclusion in the Rock Hall nomination isn't just a historical footnote; it's recognition of a vocalist who kept going long after the Maiden chapter closed.
