Slayer's Hell Awaits Gets a 40th Anniversary Reissue — Unreleased Live Bochum 1985 Included

Slayer performing live at Rock im Park 2019

Forty years ago, Slayer released an album that redefined what heavy metal was capable of. Hell Awaits arrived in April 1985 — the same year Megadeth, Exodus, Kreator, Possessed, and Destruction all dropped debut records — and outpaced every one of them in terms of ambition, darkness, and sheer sonic menace. Metal Blade Records is marking the milestone properly: a 40th anniversary reissue drops May 15th, 2026, with previously unreleased live material from that exact era included.

Pre-orders are live now at metalblade.com/slayer.

What Made Hell Awaits Different

Kerry King put it plainly: "It's the record where Slayer became Slayer."

That framing matters. Show No Mercy (1983) was the mission statement — fast, aggressive, raw. But Hell Awaits was where the band found depth. Three of the album's seven tracks break the six-minute mark, a structural decision heavily influenced by Mercyful Fate's Melissa. Songs like "Crypts of Eternity" and the title track weren't just brutal — they were constructed. Jeff Hanneman and King were still figuring out who they were as musicians, and you can hear that exploration in the arrangements.

Tom Araya's vocal performance across the record is particularly remarkable. The speed of delivery on tracks like "Kill Again" and "Praise of Death" was something few vocalists in heavy music were attempting at the time. His ability to stay clear and precise at that tempo remains impressive forty years later.

The album was a pivot. Everything Slayer became on Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss has roots in the risks they took on Hell Awaits. You can't fully understand the back catalog without it.

The 2026 Reissue — What's In It

The anniversary package arrives in three physical formats, all mastered and restored from the original 1985 production tapes by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony.

Vinyl Box Set (3xLP):

  • Hell Awaits on Fire Splatter vinyl (gatefold)
  • Live from Bochum 1985 on 2xLP — 18 tracks, never before released physically or digitally
  • 60-page 12" format book
  • Replica ticket from the Bochum show
  • Replica Hell Awaits tour laminate
  • German tour dates poster
  • Slipmat, band posters, merch flyer, replica Satanic Wehrmacht newsletter, 2 additional flyers

'Blood' Filled Liquid Vinyl (Slayer Store Exclusive — Limited to 666):

  • Hell Awaits on blood-red filled liquid vinyl, gatefold
  • Same Engel remaster

CD Earbook (3xCD):

  • Hell Awaits CD
  • Live from Bochum 1985 2xCD — same 18-track set
  • 60-page 11" format book
  • Poster

Digital:

  • Full Hell Awaits album plus all 18 live Bochum tracks

The live set is the centerpiece here. Eighteen tracks from a single 1985 show, none of which have ever been released in any format — physical or digital. That's not archival filler. That's a legitimate document of one of the most dangerous bands alive at the peak of their early ferocity.

Live from Bochum 1985 — Full Setlist

The complete live recording runs:

Hell Awaits · Aggressive Perfector · Captor of Sin · The Final Command · Kill Again · Crypts of Eternity · Fight Till Death · Necrophiliac · Haunting the Chapel · Hardening of the Arteries · Black Magic · Die by the Sword · The Antichrist · At Dawn They Sleep · Show No Mercy · Evil Has No Boundaries · Chemical Warfare · Praise of Death

Eighteen songs pulling from across the early catalog — Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel EP, and Hell Awaits all represented. For collectors and historians, this is exactly the kind of primary source material that rarely surfaces intact.
